Update #19

Good morning(:
I just started a job and they are having me work 20 hrs a week and I some how have to balance college as well. Anyway, right now I a on chapter six out of tweet seven in Daughters of the Moon:Goddess of the Night. I am slowly getting really into this book and wanting to read more and more. I wanted to ask anyone who has read Fifty Shades of Grey, what they think of it? It is probably a little to racy to do a book review on and then post it on tumblr. Most likely I’ll read it in my leisure time. I’ll check in again next Saturday.

Here are two pictures of my nook/cover, I’ve had my nook since 2011 and I love it, especially since I’m running out of room for my physical books. I’m still buying some physical books if they are apart of a series that I already started reading before the nook came out(which is about five different series right now) but any new series or single books, I buy on the nook…a big plus is the price of the books are a third of the original price(: I’ll update next week of where in the book I am.

Until next time…

Here is the book I am reading, since I could not take a good picture of it on my nook, had to go on google for the exact book cover. I’ll post a picture of my nook later on today.

I’m not sure how much time I will have to read and update on a weekly basis but I will let y'all know soon!

Since this book is the first in its series if four other books….I’m not sure if I should just read the first book plus the second, just the first book or just the whole series….any comments about this decision would be helpful. I’ll update on how far along I am in the book next Sunday.

The Host

 “The Host”
By Stephenie Meyer

“The Host” opens up with the Healer operating on a young adult host, Melanie. Gently guiding the silver ribbon-like soul into the small incision he had made on the back of the neck of the woman. The healer, Fords Deep Waters, is concerned and hopes that the soul, Wanderer is strong enough to deal with the extremely vivid emotions and find what the Seekers are looking for…..the other few wild humans. As the book moves on in the first couple chapters, we find that Wanderer feels sorry for the humans and is conflicted about having to share her mind and body with a very present Melanie. The Seeker is pushing wanderer to push past the mental walls that Melanie puts up in order to protect her loved ones. Wanderer grows aggravated until one night, Melanie lets a barrier down and Wanderer has one memory in a dream that will cause her to grow silent when the Seeker comes back with more questions. Jared. Melanie’s boyfriend who she met on a night when she went scouting for food for herself and her brother. One day, Wanderer decides to tell the Seeker about Jared but as her feelings toward Jared grow more and more with each passing memory that makes it past Melanie’s wall, she stops talking. The Seeker grows suspicious that perhaps Melanie is still present within the body. Melanie persuades Wanderer to go and try to locate the hideout were her loved ones and other wild humans are, in hopes of trying to let them know that humans can still survive while the alien soul has taken over the body. Easier said than done. After car troubles, they’re forced to walk, hoping to find their destination. Sun burnt, starved, parched and half blistered; Jeb (Melanie’s Uncle) spots them. Jeb is kind to Wanderer but the groups of guys accompanying him are the opposite. Blind folding Wanderer, they take her to the long awaited safe house. Melanie tells Wanderer not to say anything about Melanie’s survival because they’ll think Wanderer is trying to save herself which will push them farther away. Melanie and Wanderer see Jared for the first time in months only to have him hit her in the face….damn. Melanie’s little brother on the other hand is more inviting and is the first to be told by Wanderer that Melanie is still alive. As the story pushes forward, Wanderer is “re-named” Wanda for short, a young man, Ian falls in love with Wanda and finally Melanie and Wanda decide to tell everyone that Melanie is still alive. Shocking everyone and especially Jared. As a result, Wanda helps them with a way to safely take the souls out with harming either one of the living beings. Groups of wild humans catch wind of this and one by one, the souls are sent back to the closest planets. Other souls who want to stay, inhabit the humans that did not survive the initial invasion. When it comes to wanderers turn, she asks the Doctor to let her soul die when she is removed from Melanie’s body. Against Ian, Jeb, the Doctor, and Jamie’s (Melanie’s little brother) protest, she is put under as the last words are traded between Melanie and Wanderer,

“Thank you, Wanda. My sister. I will never forget you.”

“Be happy Mel. Enjoy it all. Appreciate it for me.”

“I will” she promised.

“Bye,” we thought together.

The next chapter, Wanda is confused about the memories she suddenly gets. She finds herself opening her eyes. The doctor reveals to her that the host she had taken hadn’t survived the invasion of the last soul. It was just her. After some convincing and kisses from Ian, Wanderer made her decision.

“I will stay,” I agreed.

The final chapter of The Host; Wanda, Ian, Jared, Melanie and two others go on raid for supplies. They soon ran into other people who they thought were Seekers but happened to just be other humans. They too had a soul in a host body.

Looks like I’m not the only one who’s gone native.”….

“It’s a strange world,” I murmured, more to myself than to the other native soul.

“The strangest,” he agreed.

This novel was well written but reminded me of the Twilight saga quite a few times. I loved the plot and the creative characters although I think Stephenie could have come up with more interesting names for the Healers, Seekers, and a few others. If simplicity was apart of the souls “culture” maybe she should have made that more prominent. Over all, I love how the Author portrays the inner struggle especially when Melanie was upset when Wanderer kissed Jared and STILL upset if she kissed Ian. I loved when Wanderer told her how confusing Melanie was being about the situation. I’m a sap for love stories and this book was two love stories wrapped in one. Definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes love stories, aliens and doesn’t mind a few similarities to the Twilight saga. 8/10

The Secret Holocaust Diaries

The Secret Holocaust Diaries
The Untold Story of Nonna Bannister

“For Half a Century, a terrible secret lay hidden, locked in a trunk in an attic…”

The Novel starts off with an introduction that Nonna written herself, “I have now decided that the time has come when I must share my life story…the events described in the following pages were written from my diaries and notes that were transcribed from the four to six languages in which I had written them-starting when I was nine years old. I have translated the poems and thoughts and scripts into English…”

The first chapter is Nonna writing in her diary about being boarded on to a train to a labor camp for Russian and Polish Women on August 7th, 1942 in Konstantinovka, Ukraine.  The trains hold many events but the most appalling one happened when a Jewish woman runs along the train, pleading with the women to take her baby and give her a Russian name. She then tosses the baby towards the train and Nonna’s mother, Anna catches her. The women agreed to give her the same, Sarah. One young woman was terrified and threatened to tell the SS soldiers about the baby Jewish girl. Soon the train stopped, the baby was crying and the woman yelled at the German soldiers, telling then about the baby. One of the soldiers snatched the baby from Anna by the feet and smashed it against his knee. The crying had stopped. After this chapter, Nonna shares her family background for three chapters. She then shares her childhood all through her teenage years and finally her adult memories.

One by one, her family members disappear from her life. By the time she was 16 in 1943; her mother had to go to a “meeting” at the Gestapo and never came back. Anna still sent letters to Nonna, but never once said how she was tortured and forced to play piano and violin with broken fingers and arms. Nonna continued to study diligently to become a nurse with the help from the nurses, sisters, and priests who were like her second family.  Months later, Anna had died in an incinerator after she had become of no more use to the Nazis just days before that very camp was liberated in May of 1945.  Nonna, although heartbroken after receiving a letter from her mother along with another note from a friend of Anna, letting Nonna know what had happened to her mother,  Nonna still studied hard to finish her education. When she had gotten a position at a hospital in Germany that filled with holocaust survivors, Nonna began to search for her mother. She still hoped that her mother was still alive but her search was fruitless. Slowly, with the help of her new friends who were also the last surviving member of their families accepted that mother was really gone.

She decided to carry out her father’s dream and moved to America. Arriving in Baton Rouge, Louisiana on June 6th, 1950 and married Henry Bannister on June 23rd, 1951. Nonna had not told Henry or any of their three children about her experience in the holocaust until one day, after 53 years of marriage, Nonna had revealed what she has been doing in the attic every day for so many years. “Henry, it’s time.” She said and led Henry up to the attic where, she took a key and unlocked her trunk, sharing with him, photographs. Finally, she handed him a thick stack of paper….her whole dairy….her life story…all translated into English. She climbed down the attic stairs as he began to read. After Nonna has died, her children and husband went up to the attic to the old trunk and began the journey to share Nonna Bannister’s story with the world.

My Opinions…

The Secret Holocaust Diaries had truly touched my heart.  Compared to other holocaust stories like “Night”, I can tell Nonna tries not to make this book all about death and sadness. She shares what she remembers of her family and ties in happy memories as to balance out the horrible events that took place.  It amazes me how she was able to live with no bitterness or anger even though she is the lone survivor in her family. I admire her strength, devotion and faith that is obvious to me in her writing.  I can also say that this story is inspiring and gives hope to some who cannot find a silver lining in the darkness.

Update #1

The book I am reading right now is the Secret Holocaust Diaries, the untold story of Nonna Bannister.“ by Nonna Bannister herself with the help of Denise George and Carolyn Tomlin. Chapter 35 out of 40 and so far, I’m really enjoying it. Although it takes place in a dark time, Nonna seems to be able to share happy moments when events that take place, take a scary turn.  Ill finish the book in about a week (about 22nd of April) and by then, ill write a summary plus my own opinions in my next post.
